Base Town

Siliguri — Tourism & Transit Hub

Gateway to the Himalayas & North East

Siliguri is a developing metropolis in the Indian state of West Bengal. It sits on a narrow strip of land linking mainland India to its north-eastern states and serves as the transit point for air, road and rail traffic to Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The town hosts over 500,000 domestic and 15,000 foreign visitors annually.

Darjeeling, Gangtok, Pelling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Guwahati, Silchar and the North Eastern states are connected to Siliguri with no bypass or alternate route. Thimphu in Bhutan, Kathmandu and Biratnagar in Nepal, and Dhaka in Bangladesh are also well connected. Siliguri is the base town for tourists, trekkers, traders and transporters heading to Eastern India, the North East and neighbouring countries.

Connectivity & Communication

Siliguri is linked by its own airport, bus terminus and railway stations. Bagdogra Airport, Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus and New Jalpaiguri Railway Station form the nodal triangle for Darjeeling, Sikkim, Kalimpong, Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and neighbouring countries.

The Royal Government of Bhutan operates buses from Siliguri to Thimphu. Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong, Mirik, Sikkim and other hill stations are interlinked via National Highway 31 — each road essentially reaches south to Siliguri.

Rail Network

Siliguri's Three Railway Stations

A rare feat for any city worldwide — Siliguri hosts three historically significant stations, each playing a distinct role in Himalayan travel.

  • 1

    Siliguri Town Station

    Est. 23 Aug 1880

The oldest station in the area. During British rule it was the terminus for trains from Calcutta and the starting point for the world-famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway to Darjeeling.

  • 2

    Siliguri Junction Station

    Est. 1949

Former departure point for trains to north-eastern states until broad gauge reached Dibrugarh. Perhaps the only station in the world with all three gauges — broad, metre and narrow — still present.

  • 3

    New Jalpaiguri (NJP)

    Est. Main junction

The most important railway junction, ~10 km from Siliguri. Connected to Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and all major North East stations. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway starts its journey from NJP.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a historic steam railway and UNESCO World Heritage Site. A daily steam-engine service (running since 1890) connects Kurseong (1,458 m) to Darjeeling (2,134 m) — an eight-hour journey through spectacular mountain scenery.

You can also take the New Jalpaiguri–Darjeeling toy train. Stations on route include NJP, Siliguri Town, Siliguri Junction, Sukna, Rangtong, Tindharia, Gayabari, Mahanadi, Kurseong, Tung, Dilaram, Sonada, Rangbul, Jor Bungalow, Ghoom and Darjeeling.
