FAQs

Darjeeling Travel Questions

  • Is Nathula Pass always open?

No. Nathula Pass is open to tourists only five days a week, typically Wednesday to Sunday, and closed Monday and Tuesday. Winter (December–March) often brings closures due to snow; monsoon (July–September) can cause landslides. Most reliable months: April to mid-June and October to November.

  • Will there be snowfall in Lachung?

Peak snowfall is late December to February. Light snow may occur in late November or March. Snow at Lachung village is less guaranteed in borderline months, but nearby Yumthang Valley and Zero Point often have snow at higher elevations.

  • What kind of clothes should I carry?

Layer for changing altitude and weather. For Gangtok and Darjeeling, pack light layers plus a warm jacket for evenings. For North Sikkim, Nathula, Tsomgo Lake, Lachung, and Zero Point, carry a heavy jacket, thermals, fleece, wool cap, gloves, thick socks, and rain gear in monsoon season.

  • Is North Sikkim safe for senior citizens and kids?

North Sikkim is generally not recommended for very young children (under 5–6) or elderly travellers with heart or respiratory conditions. Lachen and Lachung sit above 8,600 ft; Yumthang and Zero Point are higher. Roads are rough and nights are very cold. Permits to Gurudongmar Lake are often restricted for guests over 60 and young children.
